But, why doesn't Nate Robinson have to compete by the same set of general rules as everyone else in the Dunk Contest?
In 2006, he won by jumping over Spud Webb, a cute little tribute (literally). It was an impressive feat, no doubt. But, prior to that flush, he'd missed a ton of attempts. Actually, 20 out of 22 on two different dunks in the competition.
OK, so he got away with missing a bunch of dunks. How that has no bearing on his final score, who knows.
Move to 2009, where a Kryptonite-green Robinson dunked over Superman. Showmanship, creativity, impressive athleticism. All good. However, as Reggie Miller says, take a closer look at Robinson's left hand.
Again, not to take anything away from the athleticism required to even accomplish such a feat, but is there going to be a contest where Robinson can win without messing up a million times or using his hand as a springboard? Just asking.
